By Jerry W. Kram
Donovan White Owl, 34, of New Town, was charged in federal court this week with murder and arson. He charged with using gasoline to set fire to a house in Mandaree in early April.
An affidavit filed with the court says White Owl had been staying at the for three weeks, and then cover the structure with gasoline after a fight with a woman.
Agents and authorities arrived at the home around 7 a.m. on April 4 for a call of a possible house fire in Mandaree near Fort Berthold Reservation. A male witness told officers someone was still in the house. The witness told authorities he awoke to screams there was a fire.
A woman was found dead in the structure by FBI agents around 3:45 p.m. The State Medical Examiner says the cause of death for 29-year-old Winnifred Louise Smith was smoke inhalation. The witness told police the suspect, White Owl, had a temper and always got loud.
