New Town gets electrical upgrade

New Town is due for an upgrade that should give the city more reliable electrical service.
Dale Haugen from Mountrail-Williams Electrical Cooperative met with the New Town City Council at its regular meeting last Wednesday. He told the council the cooperative plans to give the city’s electrical system a makeover that will give the system the capacity to handle future growth and make the system more reliable.
The city currently has a peak power demand of 6.7 megawatts. This power currently comes to the city via a 67 kilovolt power line along the Four Bears Bridge. In the redesign of the system, a 115 kv powerline will be extended from the Snake Creek pumping station near Garrison Dam first to Makoti and then to Parshall and finally to New Town. This cable will be able to handle about about 10 times New Town’s current demand, allowing considerable capacity for future growth.
