Garrett Smith has joined the staff at the New Town News as reporter and photographer.
Smith, 19, comes to the News with several years of experience in high school journalism. He worked for a school newspaper while attending the Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota and most recently was a sports reporter for the Rebel Record, a 4,000 circulation high school newspaper in San Lorenzo, Calif.
“I’ve been writing since my sophomore year,” Smith said. “I guess I was a jack of all trades, doing mostly sports and school happenings.”
At the News, Smith will focus on sporting events and other news items of general interest. He has already been on assignment at the historic groundbreaking for the Elbowoods Health Care facility as well football and boxing events.
Smith said he is also interested in writing some feature articles as he gets to know more people in the community. But if he had to choose, he would take sports because he said you get to watch a game and take photos of drama and excitement.
“Writing is fun and it’s something I just like to do,” Smith said. “Many people don’t realize it’s sometimes hard putting words together and it gives me something to do in my free time.”
