Marathon Oil awards $2,500 grant to Three Tribes Museum
Marathon Oil Corp. of Houston has awarded $2,500 to the Three Tribes Museum in New Town. The check was delivered Dec. 3 to Marilyn Hudson, museum administator, by Ed Danks on behalf of Marathon.
The grant will be used to replace the ornate heavy cast wrought iron fence around the Fort Laramie Monument. This monument was erected in Elbowoods in 1934 by the people of the Fort Berthold in appreciation of the services rendered by Four Bears and others at the Fort Laramie Treaty Conference in 1851.
The monument was designed by Arthur Mandan, Bears Arm, Drags Wolf and William Conklin. In 1953, it was relocated from Elbowoods to a bluff overlooking the Missouri at the new Sanish site. Shortly thereafter, the statue and fence were either vandalized or stolen. In 1965, the monument was moved to the museum grounds where it has since been partially restored. Replacement of the fence is expected to take place next spring.
This grant was made through Marathon’s philanthropy program and as part of their philosophy to be a responsible corporate citizen in the areas where they operate. Their charitable giving program provides support to non-profit organizations that provide educational programs and community and civic projects in their area.
