Main street project makes rapid progress

By Jerry W. Kram

At a point in 1942, when the German war machine looked like it was finally beginning to stall, Winston Churchill told his nation that "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

Businesses on the west end of Main Street in New Town may be feeling a similar sentiment as they watched Marschuetz Construction starting to lay down concrete driving lanes on Main Street after coping with construction for nearly four months. Project Superintendent Roger Watson said now that the underground work is completed, construction will proceed at an accelerated pace.

The first two blocks of pavement were completed at the end of last week. Watson said the concrete just needs to dry – a process that takes eight to nine days – and his crews can move in and start working on filling in the sides of the road and sidewalks.
