Long-distance voyagers grace the outskirts of New Town

Although a New Town man has seen a pair of wolves numerous times, he didn’t think anyone would believe him so he captured their movement on video as proof.
Rick Hornaday told the New Town News two wolves have been hanging around just south of his place, which is located roughly a mile southeast of city limits. He has also seen them north of N.D. Highway 23, just east of New Town and near the wrecking yard east of town. In addition, the local surveyor has spotted them near Reunion Bay.
“They are both pure black and are both pretty good sized with long fur,” Hornaday said. “I’d say they weigh 100 to 150 pounds a piece.”
In addition, he has heard the wolves and taped one of them howling after sunrise one morning. Hornaday said they have a long, bushy tail that almost touches the ground. He believes they ran some coyotes out of the area since he hasn’t heard the coyotes howling in recent days.
Hornaday was anxious when he first witnessed the unlikely animals lurking on the crusted snow so he ran in the house got a video camera and taped the animals for about 5 minutes. He admits the video is shaky because the wolves are a fair distance away from his house, perhaps a half mile in the original video.
Never did he dream he would get a second or third chance to capture the dark duo and be reassured at what he had seen the first time.
