Hundreds mourn slain grandmother

There wasn’t a parking spot to be found for blocks as hundreds of people came to say their final farewell to Martha Johnson on Monday. Johnson, along with three of her grandchildren were killed on Nov. 18 in her home.
An estimated 400 people attended her funeral, creating long lines to get into Bethel Lutheran Church, where Johnson was chairman of the church board. According to Pastor Grant Patterson, the choir loft, fellowship hall and dining room were all filled during the service.
Johnson was remembered a person who was deeply involved with her church and community. Johnson worked for Northrup Grummon in New Town for 30 years before she retired. Over the years she was president of the New Town Chamber of Commerce and was active in Girl Scouts and 4-H. She and her husband Harley loved the outdoors. She served as secretary/treasurer of the New Town Marina Club. She received her pilots license in 1990. Her hobbies included gardening, bridge, quilting and sewing.
