High School Activities Association proposes 3-class system for basketball, volleyball

A three-class system has been proposed for high school basketball and volleyball in North Dakota and it would change the way area schools play regular-season games and tournaments and would eliminate several tournaments across the state.
Meetings were held in February in Minot, Valley City, Grand Forks and Dickinson by the North Dakota High School Activities Association to gauge interest in competing in a three-class system. Opinions were debated, however, none are yet quantifiable.
According to Brian Bubach, a media spokesman for the NDHSAA, surveys have gone out to superintendents and athletic directors and a final decision will be made on April 15. If a change is made, three classes would begin play in the fall of 2010.
“This is a proposal. This isn’t a done deal,” Bubach said. “It’s been proposed and there are a number of pros and cons the board will have to consider.”
According to Bubach, an overlap in volleyball and basketball, the number of tournament games played, the parity of play and the number of teams in “Class B” districts have all been brought up.
In addition, increased travel of some of the teams has been discussed in the regional meetings, Bubach said, and the board is looking for feedback.
