Harry’s hungry for customers to return

By Jerry W. Kram

When Harry "the Greek" Amanatidis came to New Town a few years ago, he was just looking to build a new business selling Greek-American food to a hungry community.

He has faced a number of challenges over the last two years, including having a car stolen and having the tent he used to cater events like area powwows destroyed by windstorms twice. But it could be a city construction project that may shut him down for good.

Amanatidis’ shop, called Let’s Eat Gyros, is located at the intersection of North Dakota Highway 23 and College Drive. Normally, such a busy corner would be an ideal location for a restaurant. But for more than half a year, that corner has been under construction first with the repaving of the highway and then with a city sewer extension.

"For seven months I have put up with this," Amanatidis said. "I have many people who used to be regular customers but they tell me they are afraid to drive into my parking lot because of all the equipment. My walkup business has dropped by half."
