Group talks sustainability at Protecting Mother Earth Gathering

The Protecting Mother Earth (PME) Gathering, held July 28-31 at the Little Shell Antelope Society arbor west of New Town provided opportunities to reconnect with culture, interact with like-minded individuals from all over the country and to have discussions involving environmental justice and sustainable living.
While guest speaker and informational session topics ranged from straw bale housing to offshore oil in Alaska to nuclear energy, Pat Spears and Bob Gough brought things a little closer to Fort Berthold with their presentation about renewable energy in the Great Plains.
Spears, of the Lower Brule Reservation in South Dakota, and Gough, of the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, are president and secretary, respectively, of an organization called Inter-tribal Council on Utility Policy (COUP). Inter-tribal COUP, of which the Three Affiliated Tribes are members, works with tribes to develop a plan for sustainable energy and overall living on reservations.
