Grant to fund Tribal Drug Court

Grant to fund Tribal Drug Court
By Jerry W. Kram

The Three Affiliated Tribes is going to create a Wellness Drug Court with funding from a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.
The three-year, $500,000 grant will fund the creation and staffing of the court, which will operate as part of the Fort Berthold District Court, said Lisa Redford, TAT Planning & Grants Management Director.
“It is part of the justice systems alcohol and substance abuse program,” Redford said. “It is called a Healing to Wellness Court. It will be for both juveniles and adults.”
The grant sets out some ambitious goals for the new court. It seeks to reduce alcohol and drug related offenses on the reservation by 50 percent in three years. It also seeks to reduce the recidivism rate for those offenses by 50 percent. It will seek to use family support systems along with intense judicial intervention to keep offenders from getting into more trouble.
