Grant brings artist in residence program to Good Samaritan Society

An interesting program through a $9,750 grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts is coming to the Good Samaritan Home in New Town and Rock View in Parshall.
The local arts council will work with the nursing home to bring artists and art activities to its elder residents, many of whom suffer health problems that limit their mobility and access to the artistic activities of the wider community.
This project is supported by the Three Tribes Museum, the Good Samaritan Homes in New Town and Parshall and the North Dakota Council on the Arts.
Lila Hague-Stoffel, a representative of the North Dakota Council on the Arts, was in New Town last Wednesday for an orientation to get nursing home and care facility employees up to date on what can be expected. Nine people attended the four-hour orientation.
Stoffel had talked about nursing home residents and how the staff can accommodate them to be included in various forms of art. She said many of the things that are done on a routine basis, aren’t always best for the residents.
For instance, she said it’s hard for elderly to hold a standard pencil if they have arthritic hands. Stoffel suggested a very inexpensive alternative, carpenter’s pencils from a local lumber yard or hardware store.
