Gardens were for more than food

For Native American culture, corn has a significant value beyond food source, according to Bernadine Young Bird, Native American Studies instructor at Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College.
“We have a lot of ties to corn. We are a spiritually based people who have always believed that all forms of life are sacred and that connection is present in every moment we live,” Young Bird said.
Throughout November, efforts to revitalize and preserve those values has been front and center at the college.
“What we care for and nurture in all things, plants, animals and humans will take care of us,” she said
It is that belief that permeates everything from science to gardening.
“Everything is connected and that is how we view our world,” she said.
