Former Region 3 wrestling coaches honored recently
At the Region 3 Wrestling Tournament held in New Town on February 11, three retired coaches were honored for their many years of service to their teams. Terry Mathson, New Town Eagles, Mike Thingstad, Velva Aggies, and Davy Zinke, Rolla Bulldogs retired from wrestling coaching over the past two years. Each coach had distinguished careers at their respective schools for over twenty years. Each coach was recognized was present at the tournament and received a plaque.
Terry Mathson was the Head Wrestling Coach for New Town for 23 years from 1988-2010. His dual teams won 215 matches. He coached 66 individual state placers including four state champions. Under his tenure, the Eagles won three regional championships and two runner-up finishes. The team had four top ten finishes at the ND State Tournament. He was selected as Region Coach of the Year five times. He was the 1999 North Dakota State Class B Wrestling Coach of the Year. During his last season (2009-2010), the dual team qualified for its first ND State Class B State Dual Tournament.
