Visiting the fire station was an eye-opening education for New Town school children last week.
Observing National Fire Prevention Week, New Town’s volunteer department held an open house in which first through third graders at Edwin Loe Elementary visited the station and learned about fire prevention and what to do in the event there is a blaze.
In addition, the department also brought in Smokie the Bear to convince the kids that fire prevention is an important aspect of daily living. Smokie’s message was brief, but the children took to the familiar 6-foot bear, shaking hands, taking photographs and touching the fur on his arms to make sure he was really standing there.
