FBCC students take back the night

Domestic violence has long been a scourge on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. It has only gotten worse with the influx of people, drugs and crime that have accompanied the oil boom in the region. Thursday, students from Fort Berthold Community College joined with community members to help those who have suffered from domestic violence, remember those who have been lost to domestic violence and prevent the next generation from living in fear of domestic violence.
Brittany Cree, Mark Greene and Joni Foote were the organizers of this year’s Take Back the Night march. They are students in the college’s Social Work program.
"Take Back the Night has been going on for 14 years to raise awareness of domestic violence in the community," Cree said. "The march is show people in our community that we are aware domestic violence is in our community. We don’t want to be quiet about it, especially since I am a survivor. It means a lot to me to know that there are people in our community and our school who are willing to make a difference."
The march started with a prayer by Hidatsa elder Delvin Driver, Sr., and a song from a drum group.
