Development group reports progress

By Jerry W. Kram

The North Segment Community Development Corporation is ready for a lot of change in New Town this year.

The NSCDC has plans to renovate and rebuild a full block of buildings on New Towns Main Street and has other projects to provide housing in New Town and Van Hook.

Tom Hale, owner of TDH Fast Foods and Catering and Vice President of NSCDC, said the corporations goal is to work on developments that would help all the areas residents, including both tribal members and nonmembers. He gave an example of one project where the corporation plans to purchase a plot of land in New Town owned by the 4 Bears Casino in order to build an apartment building for casino employees.

"They have the same problem as a lot of us," Hale said. "They have good employees who are having to commute from Minot or where ever and are getting sick of it. So we came together to see what we could do. That’s one project we want to start this spring."

Hale aid that the corporation is also working on affordable housing, including two apartment buildings near the Northern Lights Community Center. The group is also looking to build another apartment building on the site of the Mobile Home Park formerly owned by Darrell Salter. Other properties the group is looking at developer are the 1804 Trailer Court, 40 acres south of the Elbowoods Clinic and 26 acres east of New Town on North Dakota Highway 23 and a 100 home development near Van Hook. The group is also negotiating for access to the Hidatsa Hills development west of New Town along Lake Sakakawea.
