New Town man grows 38-pound brassica
in backyard garden

Vegetable producers in Alaska’s Matanuska Valley may want to take note of Lynn Harris here in North Dakota.
Harris, who lives just east of New Town, grew some tremendous produce this year including a 38-pound cabbage and at least two potatoes that each weighed more than a pound. He had various other items that turned out unusually large including several more cabbages, potatoes and carrots.
But the 38-pound brassica has been the talk of the Harris household for months now. Harris said he let it grow as long as he could and picked it just to beat the first frost of the season, Sept. 28.
His cabbage is reminiscent of some of the huge vegetables that are produced in Alaska’s Matanuska Valley each summer because of constant, 24-hour daylight around the summer solstice. Harris didn’t have that luxury in Mountrail County, so how did he grow such a colossal cole slaw.
“I just put in manure a few years ago and gave it some Miracle Gro when it was planted,” he said. “I had weed problems the first couple of years, but nothing since. I have a small garden every year and have never seen a cabbage that size.”
