College celebrates Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month. No where has that been more evident than at Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College. NHSC held a series of events throughout the month to emphasize and celebrate native heritage. A corn ball demonstration was key among them.
Corn balls were an extremely important food and nutrition source to Native Americans historically and the tradition continues. Students, staff and the public were invited to a corn ball demonstration to celebrate its place in tradition. Mary Price Baker, a NHSC alumnus, explained that preparing the key ingredients is critical to success. Several dried corn varieties graced the walls of the college cultural center. Baker said that the corn for the demonstration came from the college’s traditional garden thanks to Bernadine Young Bird’s cultural expertise.
“Corn is not the same today as it used to be. It has a much higher sugar content today. We know that traditionally, its use for corn balls was specifically selected. They used what we called ‘gummy corn’ that would stick together
