Christmas memories on the North Shore

By Edna Sailor
Church Bells, gingerbread cookies, gently falling snow and thoughts about Santa Claus all herald the Christmas season. For many of us those memories harken back to a time when life seemed to move more slowly and simply than life happens today.
Marlys Aubol of New Town remembers hers well. Particularly, she remembers the impact of the war on her family Christmas.
”I was born during the war and my Mother used to tell me that she got a sock in the mail and then had to stand in line to get the other sock to make a pair in order to wear them.”
She also remembers Santa.
“Santa would come to my Aunt and Uncle’s house. When I was about 6 or 7, we would hear a big noise outside and Santa would then come in. It may have been my uncle but we did not know that then,” Aubol said.
“Christmas is so different now. Back then it was all about the Christmas program at the church. As a youngster that was a big part of Christmas for me. I was an only child but we had 43 cousins and at about 8 or 9 we were all very close. We gathered at my Aunt and Uncle’s house for oyster stew and we were all very happy to be together for Christmas,” Aubol said.
