Child care needs addressing

Child care needs addressing
By Jerry W. Kram

Raising kids is a tough job. It also doesn’t pay very well. Making a business caring for children takes a lot of business sense to wring out a small profit.
Those are a few of the reasons New Town is desperate for child care. According to Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota, there is just a single licensed day care provider and one “declared” provider in the entire community (not counting tribally licensed facilities). Across Mountrail County, there are only 143 daycare spaces for 915 children with working mothers – about 16 percent of demand. LSS Program Director Linda Reinicke said that about 458 spaces – 50 percent of demand – is what her agency feels is an adequate level of supply.
