Chamber chafes at truck rule enforcement

By Jerry W. Kram

The New Town Chamber is glad to a lighter traffic load up and down Main Street these days. They just don’t want the new rules of the road to scare off business.

That was the message the Chamber had in a meeting with New Town Mayor Dan Uran and New Town Police Chief James Johns. Brad Reese, co-president of the Chamber told the Mayor and Chief that he has had complaints from area trucking companies that their drivers have been harassed even though they have made purchases in New Town.

Chief Johns said part of the problem has been a sand loading operation on College Drive and trucks from the city’s water depot. Some of the drivers of those trucks have argued that since they are loading inside New Town they are part of the city’s commerce. Reese said he understood that is a problem, but he was more concerned about truckers who stop and buy fuel at United Prairie, parts at NAPA or food at one of the local restaurants.
