Back to School Celebration continues to grow
By Jerry W. Kram
Back to school can be a little different on the Fort Berthold Reservation.
One difference is that the five schools that serve the reservation, New Town, Parshall, White Shield, Mandaree and Twins Buttes plus the Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College, come together for a celebration and powwow at the Little Shell Powwow Grounds in Four Bears. The celebration is hosted by the MHA Education Department and is an opportunity for students and teachers to get to know each other outside of the classroom.
“We want to build on the prior celebrations,” said MHA Education Department Director Damon Brady. “There was a time when we started out we had four drums and 100 dancers. Now we’re up to 11 drums and nearly 300 dancers. We want to celebrate back to school because it is a big time of the year, a fun time of year.”
