A North Dakota Spa Day
Cancer warriors take the plunge
By Jerry W. Kram
While the weather has been mild for February, there was a definite chill in the air for the 2020 MHA Nation Ice Warrior Plunge at the 4 Bears Marina.
About 40 jumpers plunged into the a hole cut through about 20 inches of Lake Sakakawea ice to raise money for the American Indian Cancer Foundation. MHA Tribal Chairman Mark Fox, who originated the event five years ago, said it was important to raise awareness of the toll cancer takes on Native American people and to fight to find a cure.
“We are here to raise dollars,” Fox said. “The funding is needed to address the enormous rate of cancer among Native Americans in this country. So we are doing our small part to raise funds for the American Indian Cancer Foundation. Another, minor, reason to do this is that it is healthy. It’s ice water therapy.”
Another jumper called it “a North Dakota Spa Day.”
