A new store for New Town

By Jerry W. Kram

It has been a long haul, but New Town has a new supermarket that will rival any neighboring community.

Jason’s SuperValue opened a new location just east of Teddys Residential Suites on Feb. 10. The store had been scheduled to open in the fall of last year, but was delayed by problems with the original contractor. Shoppers and the curious have been making the trek to the store all week to see what kind of selection is available and just look around the new 30,000 foot store.

"We opened at 6 a.m. Wednesday," said Ted Tracy, Chief Operation Officer of the five-store Jason’s SuperValue chain. "We had hoped for kind of a soft opening because we are still working the bugs out of few things, but people started pouring in right away."

Tracy said the early opinions of the store have been very positive. The new store features a deli that will have lunch and dinner specials, a bakery, and a meat department with a smokehouse. The increased area also means the new store can carry much more merchandise than the old store in downtown New Town. For example, Tracy said, the frozen food section has grown from 13 doors in the old store to 65 in the new store.

"We want to offer everything our customers need," Tracy said. "We want people to walk in here and say, ‘Wow, I don’t have to go to Minot to buy groceries anymore.’ We want to keep that money that has been going elsewhere here in the community. It will also help people save on gas money since they don’t have to make as many trips."
