Zacher’s Phi Beta Lambda team takes 5th in Anaheim

Remington Zacher is now part of an elite group of North Dakota college students who have stepped on to the national stage and performed well at that level.
Zacher, who grew up in Parshall and is now a sophomore at the University of North Dakota, was part of a Phi Beta Lambda business team from UND that took fifth in parlimentary procedure during the PBL national confence in Anaheim, Calif., held in late June.
In addition to Zacher, the team consisted of Heather Zimmerman, Paula Polasky and Melissa Harris, who went to high school in Kenmare. In a preliminary round, UND did well enough to qualify for the top 10 and then competed for the title, finishing fifth.
Zacher, who is no stranger to competition and has been involved in FBLA state and national competition in high school, said this was a tough gig, primarily because of the intensity of the competitors.
“There’s a lot more competition on a national level,” he said. “In state, you can pick an event and take it. At nationals, you have to know your stuff. You have to know the rules on how to conduct a meeting.”
Don Fry, who was Zacher’s adviser in high school and is now teaching in Stanley, was chaperoning a group of Stanley High School students competing in the national FBLA competition in Anaheim at the same time.
Fry talked to Zacher while in California, but wasn’t able to coach him in any way. Fry told the Mountrail County Record he knew Zacher’s team would do well because of his experience on the national level of high school competition.
“I told him to get involved and here he became a state officer at UND and now national PBL,” Fry said. “He’s a busy kid.”
