Young trees get loving care from Parshall couple

Young trees get loving care from Parshall couple

By Logan J. Davis

The phrase “Water is Life” has been a strong statement by environmentalists for several years. If trees could talk, they would all agree with that.
This spring, because of their love for trees, a Parshall couple has asked for additional duties to care for the many evergreen trees that have been planted in the Parshall city limits, near Parshall Bay, at the Santee/Lucky Mound Pow Wow grounds south of town and near the Wild Horse Addition area on the northwest edge of town.
Mel and Darlene Malnourie have been busy watering hundreds of evergreens in an effort to keep them green and alive. The recent extreme heat didn’t deter the Malnouries from their mission as they are out there doing what they love at least three times a week. Mel does a lot of the heavy work but Darlene hangs right in there with her husband as they provide much needed water to the trees. They are supported by the Parshall Lucky Mound Segment and Tribal Councilman Mervin Packineau to help save the trees.
The Malnouries take care of more than 350 evergreens across the area. Many evergreens planted in the last two years have been suffering from the droughts that have been plaguing ranchers, farmers and the wildlife in the western side of the state. A huge water tank
