Work begins on last stretch of Highway 23

What worked in 1956 does not work now. The thin ribbon of pavement is all that was needed when North Dakota Highway 23 was built that year. To update the highway to meet modern standards, the North Dakota Department of Transportation began road work on Highway 23 this spring. The construction project includes a stretch of roadway beginning at the Highway 23 and North Dakota Highway 28 junction near Ryder. It extends east to the U.S. Highway 83 Intersection.
The project will accomplish several improvements according to Bob Allen, Assistant District Engineer at the Minot Department of Transportation office. The project is more than just improvements to the road. It is a reconstruction of the roadway.
"The work will include widening and raising the roadway, adding passing lanes as well as cutting back the hills along the way. The whole profile will result in an improved, more flat profile for the highway. This improvement will definitely provide a much better sight distance for drivers," Allen said.
