There will be a new face behind the desk in the superintendent’s office at Parshall Public Schools. John Weidner is looking forward to his first opening day of school at his new post.
Weidner is a native of Grand Island, Neb. He attended Hastings College in Nebraska and taught music and band for 13 years. He then went into school administration and earned a doctorate in administration from the University of Nebraska. He has been an administrator at schools in Brady and Weeping Water, Neb., and then was superintendent at Wapello, Iowa before coming to Parshall.
Weidner said he was drawn to Parshall because of the achievement level of its students.
“When I looked at the district I was impressed by the student scores,” he said. “Most of the students are above Average Yearly Progress (AYP) required by the No Child Left Behind law. It’s just that some other things are getting the district not to meet AYP. It’s not the grades.”
Weidner is looking forward to learning about the school from the community. He said he has a 90 day plan to meet with school board members, students, parents and other community members to learn what they see as the needs and strengths of Parshall’s schools. He will take that information and work with the school board to create a strategic plan for the school’s future.
