Warriors roll through Districts

By Jerry W. Kram
Mandaree and White Shield were the favorites coming into the District 15 Boys Basketball Tournament held in White Shield. However the road to the Region 8 Tournament was a little rockier than expected. But in the end, Mandaree rolled over the Parshall Braves to give the Warriors their first District 15 title in a decade.
In the first round all of the upper seeds did what was expected. The final scores were White Shield 62, Alexander 27; Parshall 39, North Shore-Plaza 34; New Town 66, Trinity Christian 40; and Mandaree 72, Trenton 37.
In the semi-finals, the Mandaree Warriors had a tough game with the New Town Eagles for the second time this year. The Eagles beat the Warriors early in the regular season. The Eagles had a 10 point lead on the Warriors at halftime 30-25 and increased their lead to 10 with 3:30 to go in the third quarter. By the end of the quarter, New Town was up 41-36. The Eagles maintained a four to six point lead until the last few minutes of the game when the Eagles shooting suddenly went cold while leading 49-43. The Warriors went on a run to take their first lead 50-49 with a minute left in the game. The Eagles fouled to get the ball back, and found themselves down 52-49 with five seconds to go. A long three point attempt came up short.
“The game was really physical,” said Eagles Coach Robert White. “Our point guard came out of the game and that was a very big difference. It hurts when you don’t have a floor general. Mandaree is a really good team. It could be Mandaree-White Shield in the the region championship game.”
New Town came back in the Region Qualifying game to down the North Shore Plaza Wildcats 63-52. New Town will be the fourth seed from District 15 in the Region 8 Tournament.
