Vietnam Vets gather in New Town

By Edna Sailor

Dave Sirra set the special cake on the table. It read Welcome Home. That said it all. The welcome home cake was part of a recent welcome home event sponsored by the Byron Kulland Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 487.

To mark 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War, the national VVA and its local chapters have been holding events and activities to honor the veterans who served and those who gave their lives in the war.

Despite a spring snowstorm, veterans gathered at William Wilber’s home in New Town. More than thirty veterans and families were able to brave the weather and enjoy the afternoon.

Membership was one thing on their minds. The invitation went out early to invite even more veterans to join the group. That effort will be ongoing.

Honoring all POW and MIA veterans was a high priority for the event. The missing man table was set with its reminders that there are those who paid the ultimate price during the Vietnam War. Dave Hilleren read the touching ceremonial script for the presentation.
