Tournament marked by tragedy

By Jerry W. Kram

The second day of the Region 8 Girls Basketball Tournament in New Town was overshadowed by the loss of three students from Ray High School who died in an automobile accident as they returned home from Monday’s tournament games.

Senior Tanner Garman and Juniors Dalen Dorval and Waylyn Mcrae were returning from the Ray Jays girls basketball game against Parshall Monday night when the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup they were in apparently hit an icy patch while traveling west on U.S. Highway 2 about three miles west of Ray. The pickup crossed the median into the eastbound lane and struck a 2000 Peterbilt semi. The three teenagers died of their injuries. The semi driver suffered minor injuries.

Ray School superintendent Ben Schafer released the following statement early Tuesday:

"The Ray Public School is deeply saddened by this terrible tragedy. These students are loved by all and will be dearly missed. We send our thoughts, prayers, and condolences to the families and friends of these amazing young men. Our school will not be whole without them."
