Students pinch pennies for good cause

We’ve always been told that a penny saved is a penny earned. Students at the Parshall Elementary School saved a lot of pennies last week.. They weren’t putting money was for candy or an iPod though. The were raising money to help fight serious diseases that kill children and adults.
The fundraiser is called Pennies for Patients, said school councilor Teri Webberly. The High School has done the fundraiser for a few years, but this is the first time the elementary school has participated.
“I was kind of hesitant when I put up the little thermometer chart in the hall,” Webberly said. “I put the goal at $500 and was worried that the kids might only bring in $200 or so. But on the very first day they brought in more than $800. I was amazed.”
Over the course of the a week, the children brought in more than $1,600. Webberily said a couple of students continued to bring in money even after the contest was finished. The money will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help children who are fight cancer. The fact that the money was going to children like them really resonated with the students, Webberly said.
