Once again the Mountrail County Record has catapulted itself to the top of the heap among small newspapers in North Dakota.
During last weekend’s North Dakota Newspaper Association convention in Grand Forks, the Record, a BHG Inc., publication, received 15 editorial, photography and advertising awards. They included five first-place, four second-place, three third-place and three honorable-mention awards.
The Record received first-place trophies in front page design excellence. Judges analyzed a cross section of the newspaper’s front page to make their determination. The Record also won for best sports reporting on Mandaree’s Region 8 boys basketball win, government reporting on the Lewis and Clark School Board, reporting on a request for a special session of the Legislature and reporting series for a three-part series on Bakken oil.
Second-place prizes included a picture page of a church being moved from Plaza to Makoti, feature reporting for a story on a Parshall home getting a complete makeover, sports page and signature page about the Parshall Fire Department.
Third-place awards included an agricultural photo of an old Ford grain truck on the outskirts of Plaza, an outdoor recreational photo of a sail boat on the lake, and a Harvestfest picture page.
The team of Cindy and Wade Williamson, Brooke Locken and Kim Sanderson’s photos of the 2010 Harvestfest in Parshall, was a winner. It included full color photos that captured the various energetic activities going on that weekend. Last year, Cindy Williamson took third in that same category.
