Policy, personnel, perks on school board agenda

Parshall School Board members tackled a number of issues in Monday’s 2 ½-hour meeting including a school policy leading up to graduation that high school Principal Mark Grueneich says needs to be changed.
Grueneich, who presents a report at each meeting, told the board Monday he would like to see a policy change regarding the wearing of cap and gown and taking a senior trip changed to encourage more students to earn money toward those items.
Grueneich suggested that when students become sophomores, they are granted the right to raise funds for their graduation and senior trip, primarily through working concessions at sporting events.
It has come to his attention, however, that only certain students in each class are actually doing the work while the entire class benefits and that is where he is concerned.
“As of now there is no recourse so I’m asking the board to consider this for next year,” Grueneich said. “If they refuse to work, they should pay for their own cap and gown and not go on the senior trip.”
Board member Michelle Billadeau suggested some students may then refuse to pay for their cap and gown so does the school board allow them to graduate in street clothes?
“I don’t see a problem with the trip,” Billadeau said. “But I want them to graduate in a cap and gown.”
Supt. Steve Cascaden said there isn’t a lot the board can do about the trip because it actually happens when school is over and seniors are technically no longer students.
But Grueneich countered, saying the senior class funds actually belong to the school and if students didn’t earn it, they can be barred from going on the trip.
But then board member Karmon Taft presented a hypothetical situation to the principal. He said what happens if a senior has enough money to pay for the trip.
Despite that possibility, it is a class function and individuals would not be allowed to participate.
