It’s one of those things that no one looks forward to but everyone agrees in necessary, sort of like a fiscal colonoscopy. It’s time for the city of Parshall to make sure that everyone’s property taxes are in line with their neighbors, a process called equalization.
The process will begin just before Thanksgiving and should be finished by April, said Loren Hoffman, with AE2S engineering. Hoffman put together a proposal to conduct the process for the Parshall City Council, which approved the plan at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday. Hoffman said that as far as he could discover, Parshall hadn’t had a citywide equalization for between 20 and 35 years.
“You have houses out there that are valued at $120,000 while their neighbor’s house is valued at $20,000,” Hoffman said. “I found cards that dated back to 1987. The market in Parshall has undergone a significant change since then.”
