Parshall School Board approves tentative budget

School property taxes will be going up in the Parshall School District next year, but not by much, said school superintendent John Weidner.
The school board approved a tentative budget for the 2015-16 school year. Weidner explained that the board is required by state law to approve a draft budget in August and adopt a final budget in October. Along with the budget, Weidner presented an analysis of the changes in the district’s property taxes for next year.
Weidner said that last year’s mill levy was 60.69 mills, which was lower than expected because of the growth of taxable industrial property such as pipelines in the area. Using figures from Mountrail County, he said the farm and residential property value had risen over last year. He also expected the industrial property figure to be higher, but he wouldn’t have that number for a few months yet.
Weidner’s calculations put the tentative mill levy next year at 63, although he said it may be lower.
"But the big question for people is, ‘what is it going to cost me?’" Weidner said. "Well the answer is, not a whole lot."
Weider displayed a spreadsheet that calculated the increase in property taxes for residential and agricultural property. For a home valued at $100,000, Weidner said the school’s taxes would increase $10.40 a year, or about 87 cents a month. For agricultural property, the taxes would increase by $11.55 for every $100,000 of value.
