Farmers and ranchers in the state maintained North Dakota’s No. 1 ranking in the production of spring and durum wheat, barley, canola, sunflowers, flaxseed, pinto beans, navy beans, dry edible peas and lentils in 2008 compared with other states, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
North Dakota is also the leading producer of honey in the United States, slightly ahead of California. For total wheat production, North Dakota ranks second, behind Kansas.
Durum production in North Dakota accounted for 50 percent of the U.S. total, down from 60 percent in 2007, while spring wheat accounted for 45 percent, down from 49 percent last year.
Flax production accounted for 96 percent of the U.S. total, up from 94 percent in 2007. Canola, dry edible peas, pinto beans, sunflower, navy beans, lentils and barley production accounted for 90, 64, 65, 44, 46, 35 and 36 percent of the U.S. total, respectively.
