An idea to merge Parshall’s and New Town’s cross country teams in 2011 was shot down Monday night in Parshall after the school board voted unanimously against it.
More than 20 parents, grandparents, cross country runners, coaches and concerned citizens attended the meeting and voiced their opinions for and against co-oping high school girls and boys cross country.
“I had an in-depth talk with the team and they feel they can make a run at a state title on their own,” said girls coach Ken Wells Sr. “There are opportunities out there, but we feel we can take a state title on our own. So, I retract a previous statement of wanting a co-op.”
Wells added that during that discussion, he learned that nine of the girls were against the co-op while two favored it.
Head cross country coach Harlan Johnson said he will continue coaching no matter what would be decided in Monday’s meeting. He told the board there are a number of pros and cons dealing with the co-op.
