Mountrail County Record wins 13 awards at convention
Named second-best newspaper in its class
The Mountrail County Record won 13 awards in advertising and editorial competition during the 123rd annual North Dakota Newspaper convention held May 8 in Bismarck.
Editor Marvin Baker won three first-place prizes in photography and editorial comments. His humorous personal column about presidential candidate Sarah Palin being tricked by a Canadian disc jockey into thinking he was French President Nicolas Sarkozy, was a winner among newspapers in the circulation category 1-1,000.
Baker’s sports column about Bismarck’s Weston Dressler being named Canadian Football League Rookie of the Year was also a winner. The column was an inspirational article about players who excel in various aspects of football as Dressler did at Bismarck High School, the University of North Dakota and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Baker also took first place in the agricultural photo category with a picture of an angus yearling peeking its head out of a building during a snowstorm. In fact, Baker’s ag photos created a clean sweep for the Record in that category. He took second with his photo of horses scrounging for food in a snowstorm and third place with a picture of a grain bin traveling down N.D. Highway 23.
The judges wrote, “interesting photo,” about first, “solid photo in tough conditions,” about second and “hard to tell what’s going on without cutline,” for third.
