Despite a downward trend in taxable sales and purchases across the state from the first to the second quarter of 2009, Mountrail County continues to go against the grain with a robust increase in taxable sales and purchases.
In addition, the five principal communities in the county have either shown stability or modest increases in April, May and June, with the exception of Ross, which shows a 70 percent decrease of sales and purchases in the second quarter.
Mountrail County’s taxable sales and purchases in the second quarter were $16,540,261, up from $10,888,840 in the first quarter. Statistically, that puts Mountrail County ahead of Bottineau, Foster, McKenzie and Pembina counties in taxable sales and purchases. At the end of March, Mountrail and McKenzie counties were the only two in the state that were comparable.
According to North Dakota tax commissioner Cory Fong, second quarter statistics were kind of deceiving, primarily because of widespread flooding across the state. Northwestern counties, however, didn’t experience severe flooding.
