Last minute free throws deliver region title

By Jerry W. Kram

In the long storied history of the Parshall High School athletic programs, no girls basketball team has ever won the Region 8 Girls Basketball Tournament. Parshall girls made it to the Championship Game in 2010, 2012 and 2014, but fell just short of going to the big dance.

No more. Under the slogan "We Can Do It" this year’s Parshall Lady Braves took that final leap and will face the Kindred Vikings in the first round of the North Dakota Class B Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday at 1 p.m.

The Championship Game took place at the Northern Lights Building in New Town on Monday, with the 20-4 Braves facing the 22-1 Watford City Wolves. The Wolves were ranked fifth in the North Dakota Girls Basketball poll and an online computer ranking website had them ranked second and the Braves eighth.

The Braves tried to jump on the Wolves early, putting up a 10-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game. But the Wolves defense stiffened and the Braves had a hard time getting the ball inside to post player Cheyenne Packineau. The Wolves ended the quarter with a 11-3 run and had a 15-13 lead at the first buzzer.
