The 5th Annual Bite the Ice on “The Hook” Ice Fishing Tournament and Raffle is Saturday. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Van Hook Arm.
The event is sponsored by Parshall Promoters and New Town Chamber of Commerce.
The tournament is one of the most anticipated winter events in the area.
“We’ve had a great response to the event,” said Kristin Jaeger, one of the organizers.
The idea for a major ice fishing tournament on Lake Sakakawea began in 2006 as a way for Parshall Promoters and the New Town Chamber to join forces since the communities were so close to each other, Jaeger said.
She notes the cooperative effort has been a great collaboration.”
Attendance has fluctuated with anywhere from 261 to 369 people taking part over the last four years.
The tournament continues to grow. Jaeger said the number of tickets sold has increased each year. In 2007 (the inaugural year of the event) 500 tickets were sold. This year, the amount is 800.
Jaeger observes that participation has grown since the first year, but weather seems to dictate attendance, fluctuating with conditions the day of the event.
Tournament categories are walleye, catfish and perch. Prize money includes:
