Hoops for Hearts nets big money for Heart Association

By Edna Sailor

Learning to stay healthy begins at an early age. The American Heart Association knows this all too well and the school based Hoops for Heart promotion is a good way to teach it.

They also know it can be fun for kids too. And now, so do 21 students at Parshall Elementary School who recently completed the Hoops for Hearts project which raised more than $4000, a substantial increase from the project last year.

Kim Sanderson, Parshall Elementary Office Secretary and Troy Albertson, Physical Education Instructor teamed up to implement the project. It is not the first time the school has participated. The school first participated in 2006, and 2010. After a brief hiatus it was implemented again last year.

"To kick off the project, Mary Reiser, from the American Heart Association came in at the beginning of March and talked with the students about heart health. They talked about the importance of eating healthy and exercising. Students K-12 were invited to participate, " Sanderson said.
