Highway 23 construction near Makoti on track

By Edna Sailor

"Safety remains the primary reason for continued construction on Highway 23," James Redding of the ND Department of Transportation’s Minot Office commented on the current reconstruction project west of Makoti.

"This project is a continuation of previous construction on the road. The new segment is similar. It will provide additional road improvements for drivers," Redding said.

The heavily traveled road crosses the Four Bears Bridge west of New Town. It is one of only seven crossing points over the Missouri River in North Dakota. However, Highway 23 remains a major artery for oil, agriculture and other commerce due to its important, centralized location in the state. The road’s Highway 83 intersection allows more direct access to the east-west route over the Missouri River.

The good news for travelers is that the project near Makoti is "on schedule" according to Terry Burke, Vice President of Gratec Construction.
