Frack sand project asks for zoning delay

By Edna Sailor

Reservoir Silicates, a Canadian based company that proposed construction of an Industrial Rail Park near Makoti, has asked the Mountrail County Commission to table a decision on a zoning change for its project.

The Mountrail County Planning and Zoning Board recommended that the company’s request be denied. The company requested time to gather additional input and provide updated information to Mountrail County officials. Action on the proposed rezoning request had been slated to take place at the Tuesday of this week at the Mountrail County Commission meeting.

In their statement, Reservoir Silicates cited opposition at the July Planning and Zoning board hearing as the reason for the postponement request. On behalf of the company, a spokesperson for Reservoir Silicates, Mike Shielbelbein stated, "we would like the County Commission to table their action until Reservoir Silicates can address these concerns."

The written memo from the Canadian based company cited the following issues they wish to pursue.

"We would like to complete the intersection study (N.D. Highway 23 and 61st avenue) and get approval (or denial) from the ND DOT regarding turning lanes."
