Fort Berthold leaders inducted to Hall of Honor

By Logan J. Davis
The MHA Nation have been given many great honors over the years because of their contributions to the world. This year’s North Dakota Native American Hall of Honor induction ceremonies added three MHA Nation tribal members and other Native Americans from North Dakota to the special showcases in the North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum in Bismarck.
This year, the board inducted Keith Bear of the MHA Nation for his contributions to the music world through his flute playing and flute making. Bear spoke with emotion and pride while accepting the golden eagle trophy that each inductee receives. In his remarks to the packed state heritage auditorium, Bear recalled when he was learning how to play the native flute. He also remembers the day he was given a bag of small tools that are used to make flutes.
“When I was given those tools, my elder told me ‘you are not only a flute player, you are now a flute maker too’ and that is how I came to do what I do today,” said Bear.
