Fire District receives $2 million

The Parshall Volunteer Fire District accepted a $2 million check from Liberty Township to help get a new fire station off the ground. The district voted on the proposal at a meeting in the Parshall Fire Hall on Monday.
Dennis Keller represented the township and the meeting and told members of the rural fire district that the money came from U.S. Federal Flood Control Mineral Lease Revenue Allocation – commonly called U.S. Flood Money. The funding comes from mineral leases on land that is currently submerged under Lake Sakakawea. It is distributed to counties, townships, and school districts that lost land to the lake when Garrison Dam was completed in the 1950s. Liberty Township is located on the east side of the Van Hook Arm of the lake and more than two thirds of the township is submerged.
"We’ve fixed all our roads in the township and we were looking for the responsible thing to do with the rest of the money," Keller said. "We think the responsible thing is fire protection."
