“Happy Birthday Fort Berthold Community College,” said FBCC President Russell Mason.
The college celebrated the 39th anniversary of its founding on Friday, May 3.
”Thirty nine years ago a door of opportunity opened and some visionary people chose to act on it,” Mason said. “Mr. Leonard Bear King wrote a proposal to the Department of Education under the Title III division to strengthen developing institutions. At that time, he was working at the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of North Dakota, Director of Indian Programs.”
Tribal members, Vance and Austin Gillette were in school at UND at the time. An unofficial committee composed of other action minded tribal members contributed to the founding of the college.
