Conditions good for Bite the Ice

By Jerry W. Kram
In the 14 years of holding the Bite the Ice on the Hook ice fishing tournament, participants have experienced just about every kind of weather imaginable for February in North Dakota, from white out ground blizzards to bitter cold to the sunniest, mildest day you can imagine.
It looks like Saturday is shaping up to be one of the latter.
With a predicted high of 47 degrees, it looks like the 2020 Bite the Ice tournament may be in position to set another attendance record, which has been around 600 fishermen on the lake each of the last three years.
Van Hook resident Ardon Eide says anglers should have great conditions for the tournament. There is about 20 inches of ice on the Van Hook arm and there isn’t much snow on the ice to make driving around complicated.
“The ice is good,” Eide said. “The conditions out on the lake are good for driving and moving around.”
